December 4, 2017 By paski Leave a Comment

Fourth and Fifth Graders Ski & Ride for FREE in Pennsylvania!
A Healthy Winter Activity for Families to Enjoy Together
White Haven, PA – Fourth and fifth graders who want to ski or snowboard are
fortunate especially if they live in or near Pennsylvania. For the fourteenth year, the
Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association (PSAA) is making skiing or snowboarding free
through their Snowpass program for youths in those two grade levels.
The Snowpass allows fourth and fifth graders to hit the slopes free, up to three times
at each participating resort, when accompanied by a paying adult. Additionally, fourth
and fifth graders can take advantage of a beginner lift, lesson, and rental package free
and 50% off a beginner lift, lesson and rental package for the accompanying adult.
“We have found that fourth and fifth graders are at the ideal age to learn a new sport
with ease and to excel rapidly,” said PSAA Executive Director Linda Irvin. Through
the Snowpass Program an on-mountain experience, students can see the lessons of
their 4th & 5th grade science studies in action (such as water resources at work,
geology structure, and the physics of lift mechanics).”
Skiing and snowboarding offers families the opportunity to exercise outside together during the winter months. A ninety pound youth can burn between two and three hundred calories per hour skiing and / or snowboarding depending on their activity level. Skiing and snowboarding are listed among the activities included
in the President’s Challenge organized by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports
and Nutrition. Children and adults can earn points toward a Presidential Active
Lifestyle Award by skiing and snowboarding. Nineteen ski/snowboard resorts across
Pennsylvania belong to the Snowpass program.
The Snowpass is not restricted to residents of Pennsylvania. Any fourth or fifth grade
student can participate by completing a simple application and providing a report card
or other document verifying they are currently in the fourth or fifth grade. A photo
of the student is also required. You can apply online at www.skipa.com or download
an application and apply by mail. There is a nominal administration/ processing fee
of $35 prior to December 1 and $40 after. Quantities are limited. Snowpasses are
issued on a first come, first serve basis. Details of the program including rules and
black-out dates can be found on the website www.skipa.com. The site lists all resorts

Ski Conditions and Making Snow in the Poconos

February 10, 2017 By paski Leave a Comment

Mother Nature has not been super cooperative to local ski resorts so far this winter with higher temperatures and rainy conditions, but that has not deterred progress. Because of smart snow making efforts during cold spells and tremendous planning and hard work, local ski areas are in prime shape as February approaches.

“It has been a little of a struggle over the last two weeks with the wet and warm, but it looks real strong with the cold air coming in,” Shawnee Mountain manager Jim Tust said. “We will be cranking up the snow making and are eyeing up a good February. We do a good job of making sure that we don’t get spread thin on our snow making. With the bigger snow making system, we have come a long way. The amount of snow we can make in even marginal temperatures is amazing.”

Jack Frost/Big Boulder is operating at 100 percent with all trails open. Camelback has 32 trails open and 22 snow tubing lanes available. Elk Mountain has 27 trails open with a snow base between 30-48 inches. Montage Mountain is operating 17 trails. Shawnee has 21 trails open.

With the cold air expected over the next few weeks, ski areas will increase snowmaking. That is good news for February where local resorts will host some very important cancer awareness events.

Shawnee Mountain will hold two events February 4-5 to promote cancer awareness and raise funds for a worthy cause. On Saturday February 4th, Shawnee with host their fourth annual Paint the Mountain Pink for breast cancer awareness.  In conjunction with Pocono Health Systems, the Hope for Strength Breast Cancer Fund is running a raffle to support breast cancer.

On February 5th, Shawnee Mountain will present the Joe Riesle Memorial NASTAR Race to benefit the American Cancer Society in remembrance of long time ski instructor Joe Riesle.

“It is an important fundraiser,” Tust said. “Saturday is Hope for Strength which is a local breast cancer foundation. Sunday is for the American Cancer Society. We have a memorial race for Joe Riesle, who passed several years ago. The race is in his honor but the proceeds and sponsorship money goes to the American Cancer Society.”

Jack Frost/Big Boulder will host Ski for the Cure on Saturday, February 25th for Breast Cancer Awareness Day to benefit Susan G. Komen. Activities include pledge ski-a-thon, timed race gates, dedication run, and raffle.

“We have Ski for the Cure in February which is a great cause,” JFBB general manager Mark Daubert said.  “It is our tenth year doing it and a big percentage of that fundraising stays local in Northeastern Pennsylvania. That is a big part of the reason we do it.”

February is a perfect time to hit the slopes and support very meaningful causes in the process.

Winter Storm Jonas Kicks Off Ski Season With a BANG!

February 7, 2016 By paski Leave a Comment

Let it snow! That is not the declaration you will hear from residents of Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington D.C., but for local ski resorts, it rings true.
Winter storm Jonas brought winter in with a bang and really kicked off the skiing season after warm weather and little snow delayed the start.  Shawnee Mountain was the beneficiary of 18” of snow. Jack Frost-Big Boulder saw 10” inches fall.
“Conditions are good,” Jack Frost-Big Boulder general manager Mark Daubert said. “The cold air and snow finally got here so we are 100 percent. It’s been really great the past few weeks.”
The cold weather and snow have allowed ski resorts to ratchet up snow making and incorporate Mother Nature’s help to create a strong base. Montage Mountain is working with an 18-40 inch base of well-groomed snowpacks on their trails. Shawnee is 100 percent operational with a 24-48 inch base and Jack Frost-Big Boulder is working with a 12-36 inch base.
With the resorts working hard to make the trails perfect, they are offering some fun events to showcase their product. The month of February is the perfect time to enjoy these events. For the entire month, Montage Mountain will offer a Throwback Tuesday special where all lift tickets are $19.84. They also offer a College Wednesday promotion where students can show their 2015-2016 ID for an extended lift ticket and rental for $25.
One of the most enjoyable events will be on February 13th. Montage will host Torch Light Parade and President’s Day Weekend Fireworks. The event includes live entertainment and prize giveaways as well as a sun set torch paraded down Main Line. A fireworks display will follow to put the finishing touches on a great day.
Shawnee Mountain is also offering terrific events throughout February and March. Beginning Saturday February 6th, Shawnee will host the 3rd annual Paint the Mountain Pink. Patrons can enjoy the day and support the Hope for Strength Breast Cancer fund in the process.
On Sunday February 7th, Shawnee hosts the Joe Riesle Memorial NASTAR race to honor their friend and colleague who battled cancer. The race is open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages and will benefit the American Cancer Society.
“It’s a nice event to support the breast cancer cause,” Shawnee general manager Jim Tust said. “We give away “Hope for Strength” headbands and have special activities throughout the weekend. We do a race against cancer to support Joe Riesle. For anyone that enters the race, we donate to the American Cancer society.”
Shawnee also hosts a Military Appreciation Weekend on March 18-20. All active duty military persons and their immediate family will receive free lift tickets and a rental. All retired and reserve military person will receive a 50% discount.
“Military appreciation weekend is where we give free lift tickets and rentals to any active duty military person and their families,” Tust said. “It’s a nice way to say thank you. Other military affiliates get a half price discount.”
Big Boulder will host a Carve 4 Cancer event February 6th. Every full day lift ticket purchase will result in a donation to fight blood cancer. Carve 4 Cancer will include live music, prizes, and demos to try out the newest gear. You can also enter rail jams to test your skills on the courses.
